There is racism in cricket, says union member
by Garry Chirwa, 27 August 2004 - 15:33:06
Malawi Cricket Union (MCU) development secretary Brian Mpinda has alleged that there is racism in the union’s executive.
Mpinda alleged in an interview this week that apart from the union’s head Riz Osman and the secretary Shiraz Yusuf, the rest give him a cold shoulder because he is the only indigenous Malawian in the executive.
“The situation in the union is very unfortunate, apart from Osman and Shiraz, the rest do not want me to be in the executive.
“Actually I have never been invited to attend an executive meeting,” alleged Mpinda.
But Osman brushed aside Mpinda’s allegations describing them as unfortunate.
“Brian’s involvement in cricket is in the development area which I the head. He hasn’t had much chance to interact with other members, for the past four years he has been working directly with me or the secretary.
“He hasn’t had ties or attachments with other members because he works in the development committee, there is no segregation whatsoever and it is just a misunderstanding on his part,” explained Osman
The MCU head also said if there are times when he has not been invited to a meeting, it was due to communication breakdown.
“But certainly there is no racism in cricket that is why the local indigenous Malawian players are able to mix freely with their colleagues of Asian origin. I would say he has an attitude problem and he is finding it difficult to fit in,” said Osman.
