Fam fires stern warning to Sulom
by Garry Chirwa, 26 August 2004 - 12:48:17
This is serious. Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has ordered Sulom to cancel some Bakili Muluzi Super League (BMSL) games scheduled for the weekend or risk being suspended.
In a letter addressed to Sulom general secretary, signed by its general secretary Roosvelt Mpinganjira, Fam stated that in the wake of the Flames preparations for next weekend’s joint World Cup and Africa Nations Cup, the flagship league body should cancel all the games involving teams that have contributed four players or more to the national team.
One of the high profile games scheduled for the weekend is between champions Bakili Bullets and their sworn adversaries MTL Wanderers.
Mpinganjira confirmed the development on Wednesday saying the warning has been issued because Sulom was not being cooperative.
“We have instructed Sulom to cancel some of the games to enable the national team to prepare for the game against Kenya, already the Flames do not have ample time for preparations.
“Actually it was agreed with Sulom during our workshop last week that we will not release national team players for league games but unfortunately they went ahead to release a fixture involving teams like Bullets and Wanderers which contribute so many players to the national team.
“When I asked Sulom’s general secretary Mr Chris Kamphinda Banda he was very adamant and that is why we had to write the letter because national team games are supposed to be given priority compared to local games,” explained the Fam spokesman.
In its letter to Sulom, Fam quoted article 12 (1) of its constitution which states that: “Every affiliate of Fam has an obligation to be loyal to Fam, meaning, in particular, that the affiliate must abstain from any actions contrary to the interests of Fam.”
The association further quoted article 13 (1) which states that “Breach of statutes, regulations, directives and decisions of Fam may result, subsequent to the decision of the general assembly, in the suspension of the membership of Fam, for a maximum of two years.”
But Sulom accused Fam of witch-hunting and said there is more than what meets the eye.
Kamphinda Banda said: “The tone of the letter is quite scaring and there should be something that Fam is up to.”
He also said Sulom would meet to discuss Fam’s directive adding: “But we are likely to cancel most of the games since they want it that way.”
