With Bakili Bullets crowned Bakili Muluzi Super League (BMSL) kings well before the close of the race, focus is now on the bottom of the log table with lakeshore giants Dwasco and their brothers Illovo stuck in the dark waters of relegation.
Unless Super League of Malawi (Sulom) chooses to flout the rules, the two brothers should be bracing themselves for lower league action having finished among the four bottom positions on the log table.
Mzuzu-based Mzadd Rangers are also headed for the regional leagues following a pathetic show in the 15-team league.
Until the weekend action, Dwasco had chances to sneak out of the relegation zone but a 2-1 defeat at the hands of their own brothers in Nchalo and the embarrassing 4-0 loss suffered to MTL Wanderers left the lakeshore giants stuck in the relegation zone.
Speaking in a telephone interview from Dwangwa, the club’s chairman Reggie Karim appealed for some mercy from Sulom.
“This is sad news. Our sponsors were planning to shed off both Dwasco and Illovo and the development may give them ammunition to go ahead with the plans. We are only hoping that Sulom will give us some consideration. We have better facilities compared to other teams in the Super League,” said Karim.
But Sulom’s general secretary Chris Kamphinda Banda said it was not a question of Sulom giving consideration but what the rules said.
“It is not a question of Sulom giving a special consideration but what the rules say. It was stated in the rules and regulations that four teams shall be relegated from the Super League and three promoted from the regional leagues. If people say we should flout the rules, we can spare the teams. But our executive has not met on this issue,” said Kamphinda Banda.
Joining the machete list will be Super Escom, who closed the league with a 3-2 home loss to Silver Strikers on Sunday or Mafco.
The Salima-based soldiers are only remaining with game against their fellow soldiers Moyale Barracks and a draw or loss in that game will condemn them to the lower leagues.
A win will save them from relegation but condemn the electricians to the Southern Region Football League.
Will Moyale eliminate their own brothers as Illovo did last Saturday when they beat Dwasco 2-1? That question will be answered on September 4 at the Lilongwe Community Centre where the two military sides will clash in a deciding affair.
With 33 points from 24 games, Moyale looks steady to move out of the relegation zone, provided they get a single point from their remaining four games against Red Lions, MTL Wanderers, Bakili Bullets and Mafco.
Below is a table showing the standings in the bottom line and the full remaining fixtures released by Sulom last week.
