DPP studies Kalonga Stambuli case
by Mc Donald Chapalapata, 20 August 2004 - 12:22:17
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Ishmael Wadi said on Thursday he will be studying a file on police investigations on the death of Kalonga Stambuli who was chief executive of former president Bakili Muluzi’s bank.
Wadi said in an interview on Thursday he would decide whether to hold an inquest or go for a full trial after thoroughly going through the file.
“I have asked for the file of police investigations on the matter and I will make my decisions after I go through it because I have not had a look at the file,” said Wadi.
Police Spokesman Willie Mwaluka said in an interview on Thursday police investigations were completed and the file was submitted to the office of the DPP.
He declined to reveal details of the investigations.
A postmortem report on the death of Stambuli revealed that he was poisoned and later strangled to death on December 29, 2003.
The late Stambuli was staying with his nephew Chipiliro at his house in Blantyre at the time of his death..
A family member Martin Jawadu said the family is still waiting to hear results of the police probe.
“We are looking forward to that one day we will hear the results of the police investigations because they told us they are going to professionally handle the matter. Surely that was a public matter and government should be interested,” said Jawadu.
The now defunct national Democratic Alliance (NDA) put pressure on Muluzi to institute a commission of inquiry into the death of Stambuli in the run up to the May 20 general elections. The NDA has since merged with the UDF which Muluzi chairs.
The NDA was demanding that the inquiry should also look into issues that were raised in a document which the late Stambuli is alleged to have authored and was published in The Dispatch Newspaper and circulated on Nyasanet, a Malawian Internet discussion forum.
NDA Spokesman Salule Masangwi who was vocal and pressed for the commission of inquiry could not be reached for comment on Thursday. His mobile phone went unanswered and he was reportedly out of office.
