Kalombo not vying for Fam presidency
by Leonard Sharra, 10 August 2004 - 09:35:53
Director of Sports in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture Bester Kalombo, who was on the list of candidates being proposed for the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) presidency, has disclosed that he will not contest for the association’s hot seat.
The Caf/Fifa Instructor, who was defeated by deposed president Sameer Suleman during the polls held last December in Mzuzu, said it would be difficult for him to combine his new role at the ministry and the Fam presidency.
“If I become Fam president, I may find myself busy sorting out the association’s problems at the expense of my job. Likewise, with the backlog on my desk, I will be looking after my job at the expense of the Fam presidency,” said Kalombo without disclosing his new roles at the Ministry.
Nation Online, however learnt from sources at the Ministry last month that Kalombo was promoted from P4 Grade to P3, which is a senior management position in government.
The director of sports, who once served as a Fam executive member and general secretary, added the recent changes in government would also make it difficult for him to shoulder another challenging role.
“The minister (Chimunthu Banda) is new in this ministry and there is a new principal secretary coming. I have to work very closely with the new bosses,” he said.
But the Caf official did not completely rule out the possibility of serving in Fam.
“Members have been approaching me, saying they made a mistake in Mzuzu and if they are really serious, I can accept to take an advisory role like second vice president, who is supposed to advise the executive on technical issues.
“Being a former referees and an instructor, I have the technical know how and this position requires somebody with the technical know how.”
Asked whether he now felt there was a conflict between the positions of Director of Sports and Fam president, Kalombo insisted he did not see any conflict.
“Running football is just a hobby. That’s why I am able to fulfil Caf assignments while serving in government. My bosses also agreed there was no conflict of interest in the two positions but were concerned how I could manage both tasks,” said Kalombo, who recently had his mandate as Caf Referees’ Committee member renewed for another four years.
