Government to expand teacher training
by Juliet Chimwaga, 10 August 2004 - 09:34:28
The Ministry of Education is planning to increase the number of primary school teachers to cope with the need for more qualified teachers in the country.
Director of Teachers Education (Dited) Rosemary Ngalande said apart from building three more Teachers Training Colleges (TTCs), there are plans to extend and rehabilitate the existing institutions which are currently in bad shape.
Ngalande said the colleges will be extended to accommodate more trainees.
“Only about 2,760 teachers graduate every year but this number is very small to match with the number of teachers the country is in need of,” she said.
Currently, Blantyre, Lilongwe, Montfort and Kasungu TTCs accommodate 540 students each but the project seeks to increase the intake to 740 students each. St Joseph and Karonga which accommodate only 300 students each will also be extended, according to the director.
This project, Ngalande said, will start soon and will be funded by German Agency for Technical Corporation (GTZ).
Ngalande also said that the courses that the TTCs are offering are normal and full time.
“People think that we are now running short-time courses but that is wrong. You can go to the colleges now and you will find the students are right there on full time basis,” she said.
Efforts to talk to the director of planning in the Ministry of Education Dr Kuthemba Mwale to get details of how much the project will cost failed as he was reportedly out of office.
