Bakili Bullets failed to go into camp in Mulanje on Monday to start preparations for Sunday’s Caf Champions League Group A match against Ivory Coast’s Africa Sports due to financial problems.
But the popular outfit still departed yesterday after their sponsor former president Bakili Muluzi released K300,000 ($2,778) for the cause.
Captain Peter ‘Mjojo’ Mponda confirmed that the players and the coaching staff assembled at Kips Restaurant in Blantyre with their bags on Monday afternoon but were sent back home and advised to report the following day.
“It would have been better if we had gone earlier because this is a more important game than the two that we have played against Etoile Sahel and Enyimba.
“Realistically Africa Sports is the only team that we can beat in our group but even then it won’t be on a silver platter,” said Mponda.
However, Bullets treasurer Isaac Mkuwo said the open-handed Muluzi who has already spent millions of kwacha, immediately released K300,000 after getting wind of the predicament.
“Our sponsor has sorted us out and the team is leaving this afternoon (yesterday) for Mulanje,” said Mkuwo.
He also said the money will cover the players’ training allowances and bonuses.
