National Insurance Company (Nico) Holdings on Tuesday donated K1 million to the Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) for this year’s second Blantyre City full marathon and fun run slated for August 22, 2004.
The marathon, which was initially scheduled to take place on July 25, will attract athletes from all three regions.
Speaking when he presented a cheque to AAM, Nico’s company secretary Bettie Kacelenga said the company was pleased to give back to the community which supports it.
“It is through events like this one that Nico intends to identify itself with the community and we are also able to get to understand our clientele and able to mix with all our stakeholders in a sociable and participatory manner thereby playing a part in social development,” said Kacelenga.
She also promised to continue raising awareness of the need to be healthy and physically fit through continued sponsorship of sporting activities.
Kacelenga said it was her hope that next year the event will attract athletes from outside the country.
AAM vice president Godfrey Phiri thanked the company for the sponsorship. He said it will help them prepare for participation in Zimbabwe’s fun run.
“This sponsorship has come at the right time when we have been invited to participate in Zimbabwe’s marathon in September and October this year,” he said, promising to be accountable and use the money for the intended purpose.
Phiri acknowledged that most companies are experiencing economic hardships and said the association did not take the sponsorship for granted.
Phiri urged other companies to emulate Nico’s example.
The first Nico Fun Run started last year when it was sponsored to the tune of K500,000.
AAM secretary general Haxson Chapasa said to promote accountability, the association has opened a joint account with the sponsor so that both parties become signatories to any financial transaction involving the money.
