Road Traffic Directorate (RTD) director Jomo Mkandawire said on Monday 2,000 fake driving licences were seized and 325,000 new Sadc standard licences were issued by March 10 when drivers were expected to change documents.
Mkandawire said the exercise raised millions of kwacha but stressed that the idea was to instil discipline on the roads.
“With the new licences, the integrity of our drivers will not be questionable across the border and lives will be saved on the roads,” he said in a telephone interview from Lilongwe.
The importance of the new computerised driving licences, Mkandawire said, would be appreciated at the end of the year through reduced road accidents and not by the length of time drivers spent on queues during the exercise.
Mkandawire said traffic police have started cracking down on drivers who have not acquired the document yet. He said an offender is fined K2,000 by the police before paying K5,000 plus to go through the licensing process at RTD.
He said RTD believes there are thousands of drivers with fake licences who did not turn-up for the renewal. Most of the fake licences were being issued by syndicates in Blantyre and Lilongwe, according to earlier police findings.
