Mutharika interacts with musicians
by Our Reporter, 30 July 2004 - 15:36:55
President Bingu wa Mutharika’s meeting with top musicians in the country brought a sigh of relief among the musicians who mostly feel cheated and frustrated by promoters, the sole distributor of their music (O.G. Issa) and taxes.
During the meeting, held at Sanjika Palace the issue of O.G. Issa being the only music distributor drew a lot of applause when musician Billy Kaunda raised it.
“We work hard to produce our music, but O.G Issa is the only distributor. If other record companies could come in we would have an opportunity to choose where to take our music,” said Billy Kaunda the newly elected MP.
Kaunda further said the sole distributor exploits musicians by tossing them and their music around.
In response, Mutharika who described himself as someone who sends cockroaches scurrying away when he is singing in his bathroom, wondered how such conditions are allowed in a liberalised economy as ours.
“I would encourage you to form cooperatives among yourselves and source funds,” Mutharika encouraged them.
He added: “I know some of you didn’t vote for me but all of you are my children and I share full responsibility for you.”
And the musicians were all too excited by the promises from the president who also said he would meet them again.
