Former Fam president Geoff Gondwe is on the list of candidates being proposed for the vacant position of Fam president.
Gondwe is being named by some members from Central Region.
“It is true people here are proposing the name of Gondwe but we haven’t sat down as a region to endorse any candidates,” said acting chairman for Central Region Football Committee (CRFC) Charles Kapichi.
Malawi Football Coaches Association (MFCA) general secretary Peterkins Kayira, who is also based in the Centre, supported the suggestion to have Gondwe back at Fam but was quick to say that his association has not yet sat down to endorse any candidates.
“To be honest with you, we haven’t sat down as an association to endorse candidates but my own view is that Gondwe is the calibre of person we would want to bring back the good image of Fam. He commands a lot of respect internationally and is not corrupt-minded.
“Last time he was serving in Fam people got rid of him because they were just interested in the Fam executive positions,” said Kayira.
While describing Gondwe as someone with a strong character, Northern Region Football Committee (NRFC) general secretary Howell Msukwa said his region was yet to meet on which candidates to support for the vacant positions.
“We haven’t sat down as a region to discuss the elections issue but I know Gondwe as someone with a strong character. He has vast experience and is capable of leading the association,” said Msukwa.
Sulom president Henry Chibowa, who is also on the presidential race refused to comment on the issue.
But Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) general secretary Raphael Humba asked the Centre to hold its patience.
Asked whether he was ready to go back to Fam, Gondwe, who was Cosafa vice president said: “We all have a duty to perform to the nation and the success or failure of Fam affects all of us interested in football. If we don’t help to solve the problems in Fam then we are part of the problems,” said Gondwe.
But Gondwe warned that he was not prepared to enter into any corrupt practices.
The former Cosafa vice president, who was suspended from Fam on flimsy charges that he did not control former Fam general secretary Gift Nyirenda in South Africa said, he had no bitter feelings towards anybody.
Apart from Gondwe, other people emerging on the list include Chibowa, Director of Sports in the Sports Ministry Bester Kalombo, former coach Kelvin M’mangisa, former Fam treasurer Hubert Mfune, former Fam executive Hastings Kapenuka and former Wanderers secretary Walter Nyamilandu.
