We wanted 12 goals—Enyimba
by Garry Chirwa, 30 July 2004 - 12:24:52
Funny. As Bakili Bullets were making an all-out effort to convince the press on arrival from Nigeria on Wednesday that their 6-0 massacre at the hands of Enyimba was a result of a heavy downpour, to the contrary, the African champions proudly swaggered to the Nigerian press that had it not been for the cloud outburst, they would have put in a dozen goals.
Enyimba’s boss Felix Anyasi-Agwu and coach Felix Okey Emondi told a Nigerian daily tabloid This Day, that the heavy rains that came just before the Caf Champions League Group A match disturbed their rhythm.
“We failed to perform according to expectations, it was a scrappy encounter we could not simply play our game on such a water-logged pitch.
“Otherwise had it been we were playing on a dry turf, we would have put in between 10 and 12 goals but despite this we were able to score six goals and that was a good result,” said Emondi.
Apparently the humbled Bullets also claimed that the heavy downpour was instrumental in their 6-0 massacre at the hands of the defending champions.
Coach Kinnah Phiri said on arrival at Chileka Airport: “They are not any better, in fact they played without a system, it’s only that we were betrayed by the rains,”.
But a member of the Bullets’ board of trustees Gaston Mwenelupembe said the technical panel should not give flimsy excuses for the loss.
“As a trustee and a keen follower of the team I was greatly affected with the loss and it is an insult for them to think that we’ll buy their lame excuse that they lost because of the wet conditions when the other team was also playing under the same conditions.
“To people who understand the game, the excuses don’t make sense, we lost by a disgraceful margin that’s a fact and we should just admit that Enyimba are a better side,” said Mwenelupembe.
