Bullets drop Zakazaka
by Garry Chirwa, 22 July 2004 - 12:48:29
Sharp shooter Jimmy Zakazaka has been left out of Bakili Bullets’ 26-member squad which leaves the country on Thursday morning for Abi, Nigeria, for Sunday’s Caf Champions League Group A uphill battle against defending champions Enyimba due to an ankle injury.
Club chair Hassam Jussab confirmed on Wednesday that Zakazaka had failed a late fitness test and will not be part of the team. Another notable player who is missing on the list is goalkeeper Kachibowo Malunga.
Jussab said his team is unworried with the prospect of facing the African champions on their home soil dubbed ‘no-go-zone’ stating that Enyimba will be given a big fright and that the Bullets will come back unscathed.
Said Jussab: “We are not going there as tourists, there is nothing much to see in Nigeria. We are going there on a serious mission and that is to cause a big shock, those who are predicting disaster for us can as well forget.
“There is no way Enyimba will beat us, the worst result we will get there is a draw.”
Bold words indeed but on whether they will be turned into reality remains to be seen on Sunday.
The Bullets boss said the coaching panel has worked on the firing power which he said was the weakest area and the soccer fraternity should not lose it’s sleep.
“We scored five goals last week and that was a clear testimony that the coaches did their home work,” said Jussab.
He also said unlike in the past, the Bullets will not take on board their fans due to lack of funds.
“It’s not that we have stopped taking along our supporters but the travel costs to West Africa are rather too expensive and for now we could not afford,” said Jussab.
Team doctor Mphatso Phiri said on Wednesday that midfielders Fischer ‘Anong’a’ Kondowe and Rahim ‘Raul’ who were nursing injuries are recovering steadily and will be selected for Sunday’s encounter.
Fam executive member Flora Mwandira will lead the delegation and following is the rest of the squad: officials: Hassam Jussab, Ophman Kondowe, Isaac Nkuwo, Kondi Msungama, Kinnah Phiri, Gilbert Chirwa, John Phiri and Mphatso Phiri; Players: Swadick Sanudi, Trust Lunda, Peter Mponda (C), Wisdom Ndlovu, Petros Mwalweni, Maupo Msowoya, Chiku Kanyenda, Joseph Gatros, Fischer Kondowe, Emmanuel Chipatala, Robert Ng’ambi, Rahim Ishmail, Fundi Akidu, James Chilapondwa, Dick Malidadi, Grant Lungu, Ganizani Malunga and Mapopa Musukwa.
