by George Ntonya, 01 July 2004 - 09:11:31

Seven people died on the spot Monday when a truck collided with a saloon car near old Chez Ntemba nightclub, about two kilometres from Bunda Police roadblock in Lilongwe.
Kelvin Maigwa from police headquarters identified the dead as Francis Mbomani, driver of the saloon car, passengers Anne Kachingwe, Peter Ipyana, Ellen Kapinga, Elesen Msuseni and a man only identified as Frank. The other male passenger in the truck also died but the police could not establish his particulars.
“All the seven died because of severe head injuries,” Maigwa said Wednesday adding that the saloon car, a Toyota Corolla with registration number KK508, got wrecked in the accident while the truck had its windscreen and the left front part damaged.
The Toyota Corolla was travelling from the direction of Dedza into the city.
In a similar accident, a Reserve Bank employee Godwin Phiri died on the spot Saturday night while his friends Timothy Shaba and Suzgo Munthali sustained different injuries when a Toyota Corolla Phiri was driving ran into a stationary truck in Area 49.
Sources said that late Phiri, who resided at Shire, was driving from Area 25 where he dropped some of his friends after a party. The accident occurred while driving to drop Shaba and Munthali, according to residents in the area.
Maigwa said that Phiri’s car swerved from the left lane and hit a stationary truck which broke down and was parked on the other side of the road with bales of tobacco on board.
“The accident happened at night,” Maigwa said adding that Munthali and Shaba were rushed to Lilongwe Central Hospital.
The truck has only its bulbar dented while late Phiri’s car got extensively damaged.
The country commemorated World health Day on Saturday in Lilongwe with a theme that focused on road safety and Minister of Health Hetherwick Ntaba urged all Malawians to use the country’s road properly to avoid road traffic accidents.
