Voting will take place on Wednesday in Blantyre City Central where independent member of Parliament Gift Mwamondwe is seeking the decision of his constituents on whether to join the United Democratic Front or remain independent.
Mwamondwe said in an interview on Tuesday there has been conflicting opinion from his constituents on the matter.
“Initially I was voted an independent candidate for the constituency, therefore I thought it wise to seek second opinion of the people. That is why I am holding this referendum,” he said.
“ I actually invited the chairpersons for various political parties to ask them for an opinion about which side I should belong to but they could not agree. I told them we should do this democratically,” he said.
Mwamodwe said 84 political party leaders registered for the vote to be presided by an independent person Henry Mugabe from Ntcheu.
“There will be two boxes one for independent and another one for UDF and these are going to be placed in a room where the registered voters will exercise their right,” he said.
Mwamondwe said the voters will come from the UDF, NDA, MCP and RP.
Blantyre City Central Constituency has three areas namely: Matope, Namalimwe and M’bawa where the voters are expected to come from.
Mwamondwe invited all media houses to witness the voting.
Thirty-eight MPs were elected into Parliament as independents and some joined the UDF without consulting the constituents just after being voted into power in the May 20 polls.
Notable names include Anna Kachikho and Ettinor Koloviko.
