MHC locks out tenants
by Mclan Kanyang’wa, 22 June 2004 - 09:34:09

Some Malawi Housing Corporation ( MHC) tenants in Blantyre were last week locked out of their houses to force them to pay outstanding rentals.
Mary Banda from Naperi Township said in an interview she has stayed in MHC house NP 312 for 44 years but had outstanding arrears amounting to K18,000 ($167).
She said she was surprised when she was told she owed MHC K24,000.
“On Tuesday I was forced to vacate the house when some men from MHC came with hammers and nails to seal the house,” she said.
Banda is staying outside her house with no shelter and some of her belongings are in the bathroom and toilet.
Her family is also bathing outside the house at night, she said.
MHC gave the tenants a 30-day notice to pay outstanding rentals or leave the houses.
Banda complained that the 30 days have not elapsed and was surprised that the house was sealed.
Another tenant Jean Kamoto also from Naperi, residing in NP 312, said she got the notice last Tuesday advising her to honour the K40,000 she owed the corporation or vacate the house.
She found her house locked where she has lived for the past twenty years.
MHC public relations officer Lucy Kapito described the exercise as a normal monthly procedure to ensure the corporation gets it dues.
