Atupele Muluzi fails to congratulate Wanderers
by Oris Chimenya, 16 June 2004 - 08:59:17

Atupele Muluzi on Saturday failed to congratulate inaugural Charity Shield champions MTL Wanderers during the prize presentation ceremony held at Le Meridien Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.
Muluzi, who was guest of honour at the function organised by Super League of Malawi, surprisingly failed to mention and the nomads around whom the ceremony centred. He could not be reached later to explain why he did not acknowledge the nomads’ victory.
Instead, the young politician, who is also a lawyer, just made statements which touched on the current international exploits of Bakili Bullets in the Caf Champions League.
“Bakili Muluzi [former state president] will continue sponsoring football in Malawi and because of his commitment and good sponsorship, sports in the country has reached international standards.
“I recall BBC last week reporting about a local team. We are at a level we have never been before,” said Muluzi, who is also a member of Parliament.
Muluzi went on: “Anyway, this is sports where there are winners and losers. When we proceed, we will see other teams winning and we want Bakili Bullets to be the best team in southern Africa, and that is Muluzi’s aim”.
In contrast Charity Shield board chair Yusuf Matumula, nomads club chair Humphrey Mvula and board secretary Margaret Kubwalo all congratulated the winners in their speeches.
Mvula had special praise for his players, participating teams, former president Bakili Muluzi, Sulom, supporters, the media and the police for their role in developing sports.
As Charity Shield champions Wanderers received K600,000 ($5,555) a floating trophy and an unspecified number of T-shirts. Second placed Silver Strikers received K350,000 and some T-shirts. Third placed Blue Eagles got K300,000 plus while fourth placed Super Escom received K250,000 and T-shirts.
