Four armed robbers on Thursday morning broke into the Mzuzu regional treasury cashiers office and stole about K4 million ($37,037) for pensioners in the Northern Region. The retired workers were supposed to receive their pensions today.
Cashier for the region Maggie Makweti said four robbers came to the office at around 8 o’clock in the morning and pulled out guns to threaten staff coming in.
“We were taken by surprise when we saw four people armed with guns and pangas entering our office. They ordered everyone to lie down and targeted the main cashier where they collected over 4 million kwacha,” said Makweti.
The cashier said things happened so fast that the robbers were already gone using a gray saloon vehicle when the workers shouted for help and rushed to police for help.
Makweti said pensioners were expected be paid today because of the Freedom Day holiday that falls on Monday.
“They have taken nearly all the money and we are not sure now how we are going to pay the pensioners,” said Makweti.
An eye witness who was outside the offices at the time of the incident said: “They told us not to move and we obeyed until they sped off in a yellow vehicle which had no registration number plate on it,” said a driver at the office.
A visit to the offices soon after the incident showed several police officers combing the premises for clues..
A police officer present at the scene said: “the robbers seem to have agreed and arranged with one of the members of staff who knew that the money was ready.”
Police assistant public relations officer Kelvin Maigwa confirmed the incident, saying investigations are underway to apprehend the culprits.
