Kanyenda gets the green light
by Garry Chirwa, 08 June 2004 - 19:15:02

Flames’ leading marksman Essau Kanyenda finally got the greenlight from his Russian club FC Rostov on Tuesday evening to feature in Sunday’s Cosafa Castle Cup quarterfinal battle against the Mambas of Mozambique in Maputo.
The Russians, renowned for their love of the spirit Vodka, have probably appreciated the passion the African continent has for Castle beer, hence the decision to give him the go-ahead.
Kanyenda said on Tuesday that although the regional showcase does not appear on Fifa’s calendar, Rostov have relented.
“I spoke to our general manager Mr Rooznorv yesterday evening (Monday) and he was very understanding. He has assured me that a clearance letter will follow later this afternoon,” said Kanyenda.
The fiery forward also said the club has allowed him to stay on until after next weekend’s World Cup qualifier against Botswana’s Zebras in Gaborone.
Fam’s new general secretary Roosvelt Mpinganjira confirmed that the Russian club had indeed accepted the association’s request to extend Kanyenda’s stint with the Flames.
Initially, Rostov was expecting Kanyenda to arrive back in Russia at least by Tuesday morning.
Apart from Kanyenda, the Flames are expecting two other foreign-based players from South Africa namely Kaizer Chiefs defender Patrick ‘General’ Mabedi and Jomo Cosmos’ gangling forward Russell Mwafulirwa.
