Chibuku Super League beating boys University FC on Saturday put up some unexpected resistance to limit Super Escom to a narrow 1-0 win in a league encounter played at a waterlogged Escom ground.
University coach Prince Mkandawire blamed his goalkeeper Christopher Jana for the loss.
“We have lost because of the keeper’s carelessness. He should have punched the ball away instead of trying to hold it entirely,” said Mkandawire.
He felt the worst result should have been a draw but still, he seemed happy with the result.
“They have played better than in the previous games as they have conceded only one goal,” he said.
Escom’s Gerald Williams nearly put the home side ahead on 20 minutes but failed to place the ball into the net after he had rounded UFC’s advancing goalkeeper Jana.
Another chance was fluffed by John Zilinde who missed a golden chance on 57 minutes when he could not tap in Jack Msosa’s free kick taken a few metres from the corner flag.
UFC as University are popularly known, constantly tried to use the offside trap which created several one-on-one situations between their keeper Jana and advancing Escom strikers.
On 62 minutes Jana hesitated to go and challenge Victor Maliro who broke loose on the left and dangerously headed for the penalty area. Maliro’s shot was blocked by Trouble Kalua just before it went into the empty goal.
Escom’s goal came in the 72nd minute when substitute John Paipi having replaced Williams headed in the ball after a goalmouth scramble.
