MIJ case on Friday
by Mc Donald Chapalapata, 26 May 2004 - 18:40:47

The High Court in Blantyre is on Friday expected to hear an application by the Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ) asking it to order police to open their premises in Blantyre.
Police sealed and closed down MIJ community radio station on Sunday after it aired an interview with Mgwirizano Coalition spokesperson Kholiwe Mkandawire where she threatened that they were going to disturb the inauguration ceremony of President Bingu wa Mutharika.
MIJ executive director James Ng’ombe said on Wednesday that their lawyers managed to get a date for hearing of the matter when they went to lodge a complaint on Tuesday.
He said High Court Judge Justice George Chimasula-Phiri would determine the matter.
“We have been affected by the closure of the premises. Students were supposed to start writing their exams on Saturday and we may not administer the examinations if they do not open the premises,” said Ng’ombe.
He said there are three heavily armed policemen guarding the premises.
Four journalists namely Arthur Chokotho, Wonder Msiska, Tony Khoza and station manager Evance Masamba were picked up by police and have since been released on bail.
