A majority of voters in the Presidential and Parliamentary elections will elect Gwanda Chakuamba as President of the Republic of Malawi and they will also vote for the Mgwirizano Coalition that is led by Chakuamba, according to a straw poll carried out by Capital Radio.
The poll was conducted through visits to several districts by reporters from the station over the past few days and through a telephone call-in programme on Thursday 13 May, 2004.
A total of 350 people were interviewed in both the rural and urban areas of Mzuzu, Nkhotakota, Lilongwe, Mangochi, Mwanza, Thyolo and Mulanje.
The telephone call-ins, totalling 63, came in from Blantyre, Mwanza, Chikwawa, Chiradzulu, Zomba, Thyolo, Mulanje and Lilongwe.
The results indicated that Chakuamba who is presidential candidate of the seven-party Mgwirizano Coalition, obtained 33 percent of the vote.
He was followed by Brown Mpinganjira who is presidential candidate of the National Democratic Alliance, NDA, with 25 percent.
Third was Bingu Mutharika the presidential candidate of the alliance of the UDF/Aford/NCD with 18 percent.
Fourth was John Tembo the presidential candidate of the Malawi Congress Party, MCP, with 15 percent.
Independent presidential candidate Justin Malewezi got the fifth position with five percent.
Four percent of respondents indicated that they were yet ready to decide who to vote for.
In the parliamentary election, the poll indicated that the party that the majority of the electorate will vote for is the Mgwirizano Coalition with 29 percent.
Second is the UDF/Aford/NCD Coalition with 24 percent and third is the MCP with 15 percent and fourth is the NDA with 14 percent.
Independent candidates came fifth with eight percent, while the sixth position is made up of a combination the Republican Party (RP) which is Chakuamba’s party; the Movement for Genuine Democratic Change (Mgode) and the People's Progressive Movement (PPM) with three percent each.
The Malawi Forum for Unity and Development (Mafunde) is in seventh and last position with one percent.
The poll was not a scientific exercise but was organised and funded by Capital Radio in an effort to determine how the electorate in both the rural and urban areas of Malawi would vote in the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for Tuesday 18 May, 2004.
A margin of error of three percent was taken into consideration.
