Tragedy was what unearthed the talent in Rose Kafuliza, 54. When the first two of her children died in what she describes as unlikely circumstances, she grieved but took it well. But when a third one died a few hours after complaining of a headache in 1999, Kafuliza reached her breaking point.
Her options of recovering from her heartache were slim. She was on one hand tempted to seek the help of a traditional spiritist, to predict what caused the death of her child. On second thoughts, she decided to seek solace from the Bible where she drew knowledge. Eventually, she developed the habit of memorising verses.
Today she boasts over 24 of the Bible’s books all neatly tucked in the safety of her brain. And when she starts narrating, she will take even the most hardened person to the edge of heaven.
“It was just a revelation from God, it is nothing to do with my intelligence or my education levels because although I can speak halting English, I only went up to Standard Eight, ”says Kafuliza who is a member of Likhubula CCAP in Blantyre.
What makes her unique is that despite the fact that as one progresses in age, it becomes difficult for one to memorise a lot of information but this is not the case with Kafuliza.
In fact, she recently mesmerised people who attended a fund-raising event for the reprinting of an HIV/Aids book titled Living in Hope at Le Meridien Mount Soche Hotel.
She left the audience speechless as she recited chapters from the Bible from memory, with much skill. No wonder, churches have got wind of her stunts and she is occasionally invited to feature in their events.
“I don’t just memorise verse. I memorise situational and circumstantial verses, my first chapter to memorise was Psalms 147, following the death of my daughter.
“I am invited to churches to recite verses, depending on the theme of the function. For example, if it’s on Aids, I recite verses from Deuteronomy (she lapses into the recital without being asked) or if it’s at a wedding or church sermon, I will do it,” she says.
When she recites, she will tell you the page from which she will be reciting from and the heading of the chapter or passage. And this she does in a poetic manner which, to an extent, depicts her maturity. Kafuliza, makes the Bible verses sound as if they were not in the same Bible, she is just captivating. She must be a good story teller.
It usually takes her two to three days to memorise a chapter with as many verses as 54. Although she knows, she may never get to memorise the whole Bible, she is still determined to keep on trying. She currently has plans to put her verse on tape so that they can bring solace to others in much the same way as they did to her during her misery in 1999.
