If it was not sponsorship madness then Stanbic Bank, sponsors of the Malawi Open Stroke-play championship must explain what it was.
The bank was on a prize-giving spree on Sunday when it dished out such mouthwatering prizes as television screens, heater fan, chest freezer, stereo system, a home entertainment theatre and other big prizes to winners of this year’s tournament held over the weekend at the Lilongwe Golf Club.
But the happiest of all the 117 players that took part in the event was Blantyre- based Zone VI golfer Abdul Mohammed who went home with a home entertainment theatre after topping the championship division with a 147 score and a chest freezer for hitting the best overall net of 143.
“I would like to thank my Lord, Allah for giving me the courage, strength and patience to win this competition. I also thank the sponsors for the wonderful prizes and the golf committee for a job well done. From the sponsors, allow me to single out Margaret Kubwalo who has been great throughout the years,” said Muhammad after getting his prizes.
Two other Zone VI golfers Daniel Phiri and Kelvin Smith from Lilongwe came second and third with scores of 154 and 161 respectively. Dillea Goutam won the A Division with a 173 score followed by Mohammad Lambat who counted out Muhammad Patel on gross 174.
The B Division was won by Razim Ismael who was trailed by Mchiera Chirwa and L Hsiao. Smith had both the longest drive and nearest the pin on Saturday with Muhammad hitting the longest drive the following day. Shabir Gaffar produced the best net on Day One while S Yau claimed Sunday’s best net.
The were a total of seven 2 clubs worth K1,600 ($15) each on Saturday and eight of K1,200 each on Sunday.
Lilongwe Golf Club captain Lincoln Bailey and a representative from Golf Union of Malawi Kelvin Smith hailed Stanbic for setting new standards in golf sponsorship.
“This is the most prestigious event on our calendar and we thank Stanbic for setting high standards in as far as golf sponsorship is concerned,” said Smith.
Stanbic’s head of corporate banking William Chitsala promised that the bank would be back again next year.
“We said last year that we will be back and we have come back bigger and better,” said Chitsala.
