Stanbic Bank pumps K1.5m into Malawi Open
by Leonard Sharra, 07 May 2004 - 12:47:38

Stanbic Bank has disclosed that it has invested over K1.5 million ($14,018) into this year’s Stanbic Malawi Open Stroke-play golf tournament to be staged at the 18-hole Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC) on Saturday and Sunday.
The bank’s marketing manager Margaret Kubwalo said in an interview this week that golfers should expect many surprises in this year’s tournament which comes just a year after Stanbic sponsored the first Malawi Open at the LGC.
“We have been sponsoring golf at Lilongwe Golf Club for a long time but this is the second time we are sponsoring the Malawi Open at this club. This is a more prestigious tournament because it is open to international golfers. We want to associate this tournament with our brand, which is also international,” said Kubwalo.
Kubwalo said the bank had lined up lots of exciting prizes for the event “but we can’t disclose the prizes. We want to surprise the golfers.”
Competition secretary for LGC Mohammad Lambat said they were expecting well over 100 golders from Lilongwe, Blantyre, Zomba, Dwangwa and other golf clubs to turn up for the event.
“Golfers are very delighted and anxiously waiting for the tournament. The course has been prepared for the challenge and the greens have been hollow tinned. The competition will be divided into three categories, the Championship Division, the A Division and the B Division. There will be a 20 percent cut off in each division for the second day,” said Lambat.
