The Malawi Football Coaches Association (MFCA) has written all Football Association of Malawi (Fam) affiliates, calling them for an emergency meeting to discuss the problems rocking the local football body and map the way forward.
In a strong worded letter signed by the MFCA’s general secretary Peterkins Kayira, the coaches lament the delay by Fam in starting preparations for the 2006 Nations Cup/World Cup qualifying games, which start in two months time.
Malawi’s Flames will line up against Morocco in their first assignment at Chichiri Stadium on June 5.
The MFCA also wonder why Fam failed to register for the Caf under 17 and under 20 competitions which the coaches feel provide international exposure to upcoming youngsters.
The directive by Fifa that Fam should put its house in order is also among the issues lined up for discussion.
“These issues are detrimental to our football and need to be addressed before our football collapses. We propose Lilongwe as the venue and April 10 as the date for the meeting but affiliates are free to suggest the most convenient date if they are not comfortable with the proposed date,” reads the letter.
Confirming the letter, Kayira said there was nothing sinister with the coaches’ move saying: “These are serious problems and we want to see how we can assist Fam. Other affiliates will be free to bring other issues for discussion at the meeting,” said Kayira.
Asked whether it was necessary to call for such a meeting when Fifa has already ordered fresh elections in Fam, Kayira said: “The directive by Fifa should be among the top items on the agenda. Fam is an independent body and as stakeholders, we have to put our input in these issues,” he said.
The coaches’ association has proposed in the letter that either Sulom should fund the meeting or the affiliates should fund themselves. Each affiliate is being asked to send three delegates.
Sulom president Henry ‘Kaka’ Chibowa confirmed receipt of the letter.
“We have received the letter and we are in agreement with the concerns raised by the association. However, as a league we have to discuss the raised issues at executive level before responding.”
Chairman of the Northern Region Football League Julius Mithi said he had also received the letter.
“We have received the letter and we are for the idea as long as it is in good faith. As stakeholders we need to see that things are moving in the right direction,” said Mithi.
But Central Region Football League’s vice general secretary Paul Mzungu said he had not seen the letter.
“I haven’t seen the letter but this sounds like a good idea. As affiliates we have to sit down and come up with one voice.”
National Referees Association general secretary Youngson Chilinda said he needed to consult his colleagues because he had not received the letter.
“As affiliates we also have problems which need to be addressed. Fam told us to hold elections but some of us are resisting. Everybody has taken advantage of the problems in Fam,” said Chilinda.
Fam’s spokesman McCollins Chivunde said he would only comment after reading the document.
“I haven’t read the document. Let me find out first,” said Chivunde.
