Smith wins NBM tourney
by Oris Chimenya, 29 March 2004 - 16:58:22

Lilongwe-based 3 handicap golfer Kelvin Smith on Sunday won the National Bank of Malawi 2004 Open golf tournament played at the Blantyre Sports Club from Saturday after grossing 147.
The two-day tournament, which was played on strokeplay format, also saw Mohammed Patel win the A Division with 168 gross while Ray Davies won the B Division with 177 gross.
108 golfers from Zomba, Lilongwe and Blantyre took part in the tournament.
Speaking when he presented the prizes, NBM’s deputy chief executive George Partridge said his company’s aim is to promote the sport since not many people play it.
“We want to improve the sport of golf in the country to a level where we can compete favourably in international competitions.
“We also take pride in being associated with golf because of the level of discipline that it has, unlike other sporting activities,” he said.
Partridge observed that as a corporate citizen, NBM believes that the success of any business depends on the contribution that the business provides to the general betterment of the society in which it operates.
All the three divisions’ winners received a miniature trophy and a golf bag.
Smith however, donated the golf bag to junior golfers in Blantyre City to promote their talent.
“I at 37, was playing with two under-18s as partners, and they both played very well. Juniors are taking over. With this, I see that Malawi has a very strong future in golf and we need to encourage them and I am donating the bag to the Blantyre junior golfers,” said Smith.
NBM also donated K40,000 ($374) to the sports club for the maintenance of the golf course for which BSC captain Abdul Mukadam expressed thanks.
Nick Pallister won nearest to the pin on Saturday on hole five while Shiraz Karim made the longest drive on hole 15. Nearest to the pin on Sunday was Mark Chiutsankhondo on hole 12 while Raffik Maru made the longest drive on hole 17.
Pallister and Chiutsankhondo got toasters while Karim and Maru received set of glass tumblers.
