ACB intensifies Suleman’s probe
by Oris Chimenya, 12 March 2004 - 13:49:13

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) is calling for more people to testify in its probe into allegations that former Football Association Malawi (Fam) president Sameer Suleman bribed some delegates to vote for him at the association’s elections in December last year.
Suleman is alleged to have given some K500s ( $5) to some Fam affiliate in the Central Region when he visited the region with another ex-Fam executive member Raphael Humba before the December elections in Mzuzu.
“Investigations on the matter are in progress. There are still a number of people to be interviewed before the matter can be concluded.
“The Bureau calls upon members of the general public who have any information including documents relating to this matter to come forward and give testimony,” said ACB’s public relations officer Mayamiko Ndala in an interview.
She added that the practice of bribing voters to get their vote is an offence under Section 28 of the Corrupt Practices Act of 1995.
Suleman could not be reached as his mobile phone went unanswered but in an earlier interview he denied giving bribes to the affiliates, adding he only assisted those who asked for transport money.
Suleman was voted Fam president in the December elections but Sports Council removed him from his position for failing to submit Malawi School Certificate of Education or its equivalent as per requirement in the association’s constitution.
