Court jails woman for misappropriating government funds
by Joseph Langa, 05 February 2004 - 17:51:20

The Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe on Tuesday convicted former accounts assistant for Ministry of Health Cecilia Nkhonjera for misappropriating K1.1 million ($10,377) two years ago.
The money was meant for holding workshops to enlighten District Health officers (DHOs) on how to manage the funds in their respective districts under the decentralisation programme.
Lilongwe Chief Resident Magistrate Ken Manda found the woman guilty of the offence on Tuesday but could not sentence her because the court does not have jurisdiction for offences attracting imprisonment of more than 14 years.
Nkhonjera is currently at Maula Prison waiting for an appropriate sentencing from the High Court.
Director of Public Prosecution Fahad Assani prosecuted the case while Nkhonjera was represented by Lilongwe based-lawyer Ishmail Wadi. The trial has been running for a year.
