Soko emerges chess champ |

Seko Soko on Saturday became first champion of newly sponsored Nach Traders Mzuzu and Districts Chess League (MDCL) monthly championship when he beat Paul Khuphwathea in a close-fought final at Katoto Secondary School.
The sponsorship, which is to the tune of K72,000 ($680) will be contested for one year at K6,000 per month.
Veteran Willard Kulujiri beat Ken Gondwe to win the third place, relegating Gondwe to the fourth position.
Champion Soko who amassed six points received K1,500 and a floating trophy, runner-up Khuphwathea K1,000. Third and fourth placed Kulujiri and Gondwe received K750 and K500 respectively.
Steven Mtambalika (two points) Chandra Sesani (one and half points) and Henry Mtambo (one point) pocketed K250 each for their effort.
Gondwe, who is also MDCL secretary, announced that the next tournament will take place on 28 at Mzuzu Airport grounds from 9AM.
Gondwe, has meanwhile, requested all committee members to meet this Friday at Obrigado from 5PM.
