Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) executive director John Kapito said on Thursday that consumers will still petition the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi Limited (Escom) and Blantyre Water Board (BWB) to express concern over continued disruption of services by the two utility parastatals during the past four weeks despite meeting Escom management on Wednesday.
Kapito, who appealed to consumers to meet at the Independence Arch in Blantyre at 2 PM on Friday, said no meeting can sort out problems consumers are facing because of disruption of power and water supply.
“I met Escom management on Wednesday and they just repeated the same excuses so I told them we are going ahead with the petition,” he said.
Kapito urged consumers based in Blantyre and surrounding districts to participate saying complaining in their homes cannot solve their problems.
“We have been accused of being passive and this petition is a way of showing that we are active but we will also test the public’s reaction to consumer issues,” he said.
Last week, fed-up captains of industry met Escom management and also expressed concern that their operations are being negatively affected by the rationing of power.
