Population Services International (PSI/Malawi) on Monday presented prizes to retailers who displayed Chishango condoms outstandingly in a social marketing promotion designed to stimulate stocking of Chishango condoms by retailers to increase product access by consumers.
PSI/Malawi commercial manager Wanangwa Thindwa said in the commercial capital Blantyre that other objectives of the promotion, which ran from September 1 to October 31, 2003, included promoting goodwill between PSI/Malawi and its trade partners.
“To the consumer, this competition provided an opportunity for increased product access because condoms are not always easy to purchase, especially if the potential user cannot see them when they enter the shop,” he said. “Products have to be visible.”
Five retailers, one from the North and two each from the Central and Southern regions won the grand prizes of deep freezer each, while 21 won bicycles, 200 went away with wall clocks and 600 T-shirts.
Thindwa said shop owners who bought one case received three free dispensers containing 12 packets of Chishango representing a 25 percent discount and had to mount an attractive shelf display.
Thindwa, who could not reveal the cost of the promotion saying the prizes were already provided for by PSI donors, also said through such promotions, stigma at points of sale for buyers of condoms, has reduced.
One of the grand prize winners, Chris Chilewe of Chris’ Corner Bar in Mulanje, said he expected to win because his display was very attractive.
“I filled my display shelf with Chishango condoms and put canned beers on top of the condom packs. I also put some Chishango condoms on top of a double-door beer fridge so that everyone easily saw the condoms,” he said in an interview at the presentation function.
Winner of the second-prize of the bicycle Thom Mfune of Chakoma Investments at Ndirande Flats, also said he displayed Chishango condoms in a way that people see them as they enter the shop.
But Mfune said despite displaying posters stating that buying condoms is not an issue to hide because one is taking care of own life, people were still whispering to traders when they want condoms.
Besides Chilewe, other winners of the deep freezers were Venge Shop of Ekwendeni in Mzimba in the North, Drive-In Bottle Store at Biwi and C. Makoza of Mpingu trading centre both in the capital Lilongwe and Towera Bottle Store of Chileka roundabout in Blantyre.,
