Thirty seven swimmers on Monday came back home victorious winning 72 medals both in swimming and aqua-relays competitions during the first ever sub-Saharan Invitational Swimming Competition which took place last week in Swaziland.
The team, comprising swimmers from Blantyre, Lilongwe and Zomba, came second [with 15 gold, 28 silver and 29 bronze] after the hosts, Swaziland who scooped 102 medals. Zambia came third with 46 medals.
Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia are the other countries that took part in the competition.
Rory Buck and Keren Visser were top scorers with 9 individual medals each. Buck also got a cash prize of R100 after getting position two in a dash for cash race during the competition.
Speaking on arrival at Chileka International Airport in Blantyre, team manager Zaida Costantini said the trip was very successful because they learnt many things.
“It was very wonderful. We enjoyed the experience there and the victory we have gives us assurance that we performed wonderfully,” said Costantini.
She said due to their splendid performance, her team has been invited to participate in other international swimming competitions next year in Zambia and in Mozambique.
Costantini said the trip cost them K3 million. She thanked Air Malawi, Germany Embassy, Sub-saharan Trading Company, Aqua-pure and Bowler, Munoli Enterprises, Ocgam and the swimmers’ families for contributing in cash and kind towards their trip.,Thirty seven swimmers on Monday came back home victorious winning 72 medals both in swimming and aqua-relays competitions during the first ever sub-Saharan Invitational Swimming Competition which took place last week in Swaziland.
