Sports Council on Monday said following newly appointed top Fam executive members’ failure to surrender their Malawi Schools Certificate of Education (MSCE) to the Council, their positions have now been automatically surrendered to those that came second.
The Council’s executive secretary George Jana said in view of the upshot, Fifa and Caf referees’ instructor Bester Kalombo who lost miserably to Sameer Suleman at the elections held in Mzuzu on December 27, will take over as the association’s president.
This follows Suleman’s failure to present his certificate to Sports Council by Friday last week.
The others who failed to beat Friday’s call off point were first and second veeps Anderson Zimba and Steve Msambila respectively, and two other executive members Peter Chavula and Raphael Humba.
Jana said: “We are just going by what was agreed at the EGM in Mzuzu to the effect that those who would not submit their certificates within seven days from the day of the elections, would surrender their positions.
“And as a returning officer, we are saying the five who failed to meet the deadline should pave way to their runners-up, this is a constitutional issue it was agreed at Fam’s EGM. It is not Sports Council that came up with the decision,” added Jana.
However, Jana was also quick to point out that even those that were waiting in the wings will have to surrender their certificates.
“They too have to surrender the certificates so that we can cross check their aunthenticity with Maneb,” stressed Jana.
In view of the development, MTL Wanderers general secretary Aubrey Monjeza is likely to take over Zimba as first vice president while Football Coaches Association general secretary Peterkins Kayira will take over Msambila’s position as second veep.
Surprisingly, Kalombo said in a separate interview that he can foresee some complications regarding the issue.
“Sports Council made a mistake, the candidates were supposed to submit their certificates prior to the elections and not after being elected into office. Those that did not have the papers should have been disqualified right there
“The problem is that they let the people stand when they knew they did not have certificates and I am afraid the present situation might create a problem,” said Kalombo.
He could also not be drawn to comment on whether he is ready to take over.
“I don’t thin I can comment further until I am communicated to by the Council...I also have to hear what people say about the issue,” said Kalombo.,Sports Council on Monday said following newly appointed top Fam executive members’ failure to surrender their Malawi Schools Certificate of Education (MSCE) to the Council, their positions have now been automatically surrendered to those that came second.
