Rats nip off baby’s nose,Rats nip off baby’s nose

A one-month-old baby, whose nose was nipped off by rats last Saturday while sleeping in a house in Mzuzu, will have to undergo a plastic surgery to restore the shape of its face, health officials have said.
The 23-year-old mother of the baby, Shida Kyungu, said in an interview at St. John’s Hospital— where the child is admitted— that she left it in her room at around 10 AM and went out to the market to buy relish.
She added that when she came back, she found the baby missing.
“I was told that my friend Stella had taken the baby to the hospital after she found rats eating it in my room,” said the single mother who lives in Zolozolo Township with friends in a rented house.
Senior medical superintendent at St. John’s Hospital Dr. Austin Mdolo said in an interview that the child will have to undergo the plastic surgery to have its disfigured face restored.
“The whole nose is gone leaving out just the two holes on the surface. I think a plastic surgery would be the only solution because even if the wound heals, the nose will not be there,” said Mdolo.
But the doctor said the child was in a stable condition and the wound was healing.
Chief medical surgeon at Mzuzu Central Hospital Dr. Paul Daza said in another interview that the plastic surgery can be done at the hospital depending on the degree of injury sustained.
“We just have to wait up until the wounds are healed completely and that is when we can consider conducting a plastic surgery. The degree of injury will determine the next course of action.
“If the baby’s nostrils tissues are all damaged, then there would be very little to be done here in Malawi but if the tissues on the nostrils are intact then it will be possible for us to work on the disfigured baby’s face,” said Daza.,A one-month-old baby, whose nose was nipped off by rats last Saturday while sleeping in a house in Mzuzu, will have to undergo a plastic surgery to restore the shape of its face, health officials have said.
