Chief Justice Leonard Unyolo on Tuesday expressed concern with the absence of Attorney General Peter Fachi’s when he was admitting to the bar 15 new lawyers who have just graduated from the University of Malawi.
Unyolo said as the head of the Malawi Bar, Fachi was expected to attend the admissions or send his representative if he was busy.
“What should we do for the Attorney General to attend these admissions. He is the head of the bar and I expected him to be here. In fact, he has never attended these admissions,” said Unyolo.
He then asked Law Society secretary Charles Mhango to take up the matter with Fachi.
Mhango remarked: “They take these things for granted. They are forgetting that these lawyers will also serve in government if they leave the private sector.”
The attorney general and the society are consulted on the applications to check if they have any objections.
But Fachi said later that it is not a must for him to appear before court when the Chief Justice is admitting new lawyers.
“We are not summoned to appear before court but we are asked to indicate whether we have objections to the applications or not which we did in this case,” said Fachi.
Unyolo said in an interview later that he is impressed with the quality of lawyers graduating from the university.
“But we admit them with a condition that they should be under supervision for one year so that they attain the requisite experience,” said Unyolo.
Out of the 15 lawyers admitted, only four have joined the Legal Aid department while the rest have joined private firms.
There are four women lawyers in the group Hlupikire Phiri, Evelyn Chilingulo, Linda Kananza and Chimwemwe Mphenzi. Chilingulo has joined the Legal Aid Department.
