A group of accomplished football administrators has set up a shadow executive committee which is planning to take over the reigns of the troubled Football Association of Malawi (Fam) during the elections scheduled for December 27 in Mzuzu.
The shadow committee’s spokesman David Dube confirmed the development on Tuesday and disclosed that former Chief Justice Richard Banda has been asked to vie for the hot seat of president while MTL Wanderers boss Humphrey Mvula and Bakili Bullets vice chair Justice Dunstain Mwaungulu have been earmarked for the posts of first and second vice presidents respectively.
“It’s now time to clean the Mpira House, we have come up with a strong team that we feel can help turn things around and restore the pride of the association. Fam needs qualified and experienced administrators like the ones that have been chosen in the shadow committee,” said Dube.
He named the six committee members as former Fam general secretary Yasin Osman, former Bakili Bullets general secretary Krishna Achuthan, Civo’s chair Isaac Msiska, Super Escom boss Charles Twalibu, Dube himself and former Bullets treasurer Gedion Kalumbu Phiri.
“But we haven’t closed the doors we are still trying to get hold of others like Bester Kalombo,” he added.
Dube said except for Mvula, all the others have put their cards on the table and have accepted to vie for the cause.
“Mr Richard Banda, Justice Mwaungulu and the others have accepted but we are still trying to persuade Mr Mvula to get on board. He still holds a political position (UDF deputy director of research) and we are hoping that he can make up his mind by tomorrow (today),” said Dube, who once served as Fam treasurer.
However, Mvula expressed ignorance on the issue yesterday saying: “I am not aware of the existence of the committee and I do not even know the composition and where they met.
“But what I would say is that there should be a thorough consultative process, careful selection of individuals that have a track record of achievements.
“Individuals selected must also be prepared to work very hard because Fam is currently in serious problems and people should also avoid turning the association into a friendship club when proposing names,” said the blunt Mvula.
Dube said discussions with affiliates are already underway to try and convince them to get the shadow committee on board.
“We are talking to affiliates so that they should nominate us and then eventually vote for us at the AGM for the betterment of the game,” said Dube before quickly pointing out “but we are aware that it is a give and take situation and we’ll have to accommodate affiliates’ views as well if we are to succeed because they run the show.”
He said the committee has already started lobbying Super League clubs through their new body Super League Association of Malawi (Sulom) and Bullets chair Hassam Jussab.
“Thereafter, we’ll approach regional and other committees,” said Dube.
Jussab confirmed that he is already talking to clubs to put their full weight behind the committee saying: “I can assure them that they will have 100 percent support from the clubs.” |
