A Company retains title |

A Company registered 33 points to retain the championship of the Three-Malawi Rifles 12km road race competition at Moyale Barracks in the North last Friday.
The race, which was competed in good weather conditions, started from Moyale Parade Square to Nkhata Bay road, then Mzuzu Government Secondary School before connecting to Mzuzu Technical College.
The race then descended to Mzuzu Airport to Clock Tower, back to Nkhata Bay road and then to the finishing point — Moyale Parade Square.
C Company on 120 points finished second while B Company came third on 142 points.
Always Zingire once again maintained his winning ways when he completed the course in 52min 23sec, followed by Malani Mkulama in 53min 12sec while Carlos Lambwe finished third in 53min 19sec. The three are from A Company.
Emmanuel Mlonya (who has been running for 25 years) of Headquarters and Kaperenjange of A Company recorded 56:02 and 57:30 to finish fourth and fifth respectively.
Champions A Company were presented with a trophy and K3,000( about $30) cash, runners-up C Company got K2,000 and third-placed B Company K1,000.
Zingire pocketed K1,500, bread donated by Super Bake and a pressing iron donated by Wabwezi Withu Store in Mzuzu.
Edith Munthali, a civilian woman referee, finished last and was rewarded with K200 for her bravery.
The prizes were presented by Commanding Officer Lt. Colonel P. Phiri who commended the runners for their good performance.
“You have greatly improved your standards by breaking last year’s records,” he said, adding, “keep it up by training hard so that we are well represented at the national level.”
“Sports build healthy minds and bodies,” he said. “If you maintain your standards, one day you’ll find yourself running overseas.”
28 of the 84 runners were civilians.
