Super Escom this week unveiled ambitious plans to turn their ground into a mini stadium.
Club chairman boss Sunduzwayo Madise said the project will start as soon as the commission’s management gives it a seal of approval. He could not say how much the project is going to cost.
“Our designers are still working on the modalities on how the ground should look like but we might move the goal posts from the current north-south to east-west to create more space since the general belief is that the ground is small.
“We don’t know how long it will take but we want the project to start as soon as management approves our proposal. Our plans are that the mini stadium will be at least twice the capacity of BAT Ground and that all the stands should be roofed,” Madise explained.
The Escom chair said once the project is over, the ground will be open to other teams to use it as home ground.
“This will be one way of generating funds,” Madise said
He also said the ground, situated near its powerhouse, will be ready to stage Super League games on temporal basis starting this coming weekend.
“We want to construct a temporal fence on the southern part so that we can play our weekend games against UFC and MTL Wanderers at home and thereafter we can start constructing a permanent wall fence which will cost us about K1 million.”
Both Escom’s weekend games have been scheduled for BAT Ground.
In another development, MDC United have said that their ground in Chilomoni Township, which is undergoing renovations, is not yet ready to stage big games.
The statement comes just a few days before their home Chibuku Super League game against Total Big Bullets scheduled for Sunday.
The club’s general secretary Gregory Mhango said his club feared for the safety of the materials that are being used in reconstructing the ground.
“Only games that attract small crowds can be played at MDC Ground at the moment,” Mhango said.
He also cleared the air surrounding reports that the Saints had turned down a request from Bullets to use the pitch as their home ground.
“I don’t know where Fam got that from because I discussed the issue with my Bullets counterpart (Krishna Achuthan) but we never came up with any agreement, I told him that the issue would be tabled at our next executive meeting,” Mhango said.
Achuthan also said he was surprised with Fam’s move to schedule their postponed games last weekend for MDC Ground.
“We never made any written communication with Fam that we would now be using MDC Ground and I too was surprised where they got that from,” Achuthan said.
