Indeed, Suleman childish
I am inclined to agree with Mzuzu and Districts Football League chairman Julius Mithi that Fam caretaker boss Sameer Suleman is childish and should not be taken seriously either in the press or anywhere else. Suleman has taken the public for granted by threatening to resign and later rescinding it, saying some big shots pleaded with him to carry on. Suleman is showing self-importance by saying some big shots pleaded with him to stay. He has not mentioned the names of these big shots and so it is difficult to believe him. But assuming those so-called big shots indeed pleaded with him, then they were out of their minds because Suleman, in my view, has not achieved anything at Fam that should warrant someone to plead with him to stay on. He is part of the present Fam which is an embarrassment to our beautiful game. As for consulting his friends and family, Suleman should have done this before blowing his intention to resign to the public. In case Suleman wants to repeat this same stunt in the future, we will not take him seriously.
Watch out affiliates
Tomorrow Football Association of Malawi will hold an extraordinary general meeting in Blantyre during which, among other things, the association plus its affiliates will approve new statutes as was demanded by world soccer governing body, Fifa. I call upon delegates to closely scrutinise the statutes. The problem with most regulations in Malawi is that they are put in place to protect the positions of those people making them and also as a way to blocking others. It is not a secret that the adhoc committee making new Fam statutes was dominated by the incumbent Fam executive members. It is also not a secret that this Fam has failed and that the writing is on the wall for them. They know this and attempts could be made to protect themselves. One statute that should be removed is the one that bars people outside Fam and its affiliates to contest for elections. This is unfair because Fam and its establishment are full of dead wood which must go. Others must come in. Do not block them.
Investigate the rumours
Fam treasurer Hubert Mfune’s comments that his association is aware that some referees in the country receive bribes to influence games might have been cursory but they call for an immediate investigation. There has been several high profiled games that witnessed dubious refereeing and yet nothing was done about them. I am not sure what Mfune means when he says there is no concrete evidence about the bribery. But I thought he and his colleagues should look for the concrete evidence. It cannot come on a silver platter. It has to be him and his association looking for it if they are really interested in nipping the cancer in the bud. You see Mr Mfune, Malawians are tired of hearing the words there is no evidence. They think it is a way of covering up corruption which they know exists even in soccer. You remember Mr Mfune, that the report of financial mismanagement in your association was dismissed more or less on the same terms. There is a precedent after all. Do not allow referees to destroy soccer. Investigate and find those that are corrupt.
