Another child found dead in LL
by Joseph Langa, 02 October 2003 - 08:49:46
Another child was on Tuesday found dead in Lilongwe a few metres from where a six-year-old girl was found dead allegedly after being assaulted, gang-raped and strangled to death near Mchesi Primary School along Lilongwe River bank barely two weeks ago.
The child, Tikhalenawo Kalombo, 10, who was living with his parents in Mchesi township was found floating in Lilongwe River already dead at around 10 AM.
Several children from the nearby Mchesi Primary School abandoned their classes to watch the police retrieving the remains of the dead child from the river. He was a Standard Three pupil at Livimbo LEA School in the city, according to the police.
Police spokesman George Chikowi confirmed the incident in an interview, saying the police suspect he went to the river to swim with friends who may have been afraid to report the matter after seeing that he had drowned. He said, however, that the police are still investigating the matter.
Lilongwe Central Hospital administrator Zithane Nkunika said the boy’s parents reported him missing on Sunday.
Nkunika said the postmortem results showed that the major cause of death was drowning although he could not say how the boy found himself in the river.
