by James Mphande, 17 September 2003 - 10:06:00
Pretty Boy of the Gule wa Aphodo fame during his Uhuru Band days has produced a solo album but is now forming band.
Breaking the news on Wednesday, Pretty Boy— whose real name is Wyson Matola— said the Psa! Mbalame is already on the market.
“The album has 10 songs in reggae, kwaito and traditional beats from dances like manganje and chimtali. The songs are in Yao, English and Chichewa,” said the artist.
The album was recorded at the now popular music kitchen Golden Music Studio where the highest selling album at the moment, Joseph Nkasa’s Tigwirane Manja, was recorded.
He said the album featured Solomon Ntambalika, William Khwiliro and Joseph Jaffu.
“This is my debut album and I have made sure that I come big and to achieve this I have also formed a band called Adzukulu Vibrations which has already made two appearances at Sangalala and Zalewa leisure centres in Mwanza,” he said.
Although the group— formed three months ago— has no equipment of its own, Pretty Boy said they practise using acoustic instruments but hires some when holding shows.
About the album, the artist said he has big plans to promote it.
“Almost all songs are the songs were sent to the radio stations. In fact the title track made it to position four on MBC Radio 2’s Top 20 charts. If all goes well, next week we will be a shooting a video of Mwanambera, one of the tracks,” he said.
He said he does not expect a rosy world ahead of him but will strive to do everything to make a mark in music.
“I do not have any sponsor and this is why I struggled to come with the album. The fact that I am doing my own thing gives me much strength to dedicate everything to the career,” he said.
Pretty Boy has an interest in promoting traditional values through his music and most of his songs are in the along the same lines.
