The world soccer governing body, Fifa, has ordered Fam to call for an annual general meeting (AGM) before the end of this year to elect a new executive in the wake of the crisis that has threatened to cripple the association.
Fifa’s directive follows a request made by the Malawi National Council of Sports to allow it dissolve Fam executive and replace it with an interim committee in order to refine the association’s constitution, draw a proper development plan and enable fresh elections to take place.
In a letter dated September 1, 2003, signed by general secretary Urs Linsi, addressed to Fam and copied to Sports Council and Caf, Fifa has also advised the troubled association to draft new statutes in accordance with Fifa standard statutes.
“An ad hoc committee should carry out the project by October 31, 2003 at the latest,” reads part of the letter.
Fifa also ordered that the adhoc committee should comprise three members from Fam and a member each from the National Olympic Committee and Sports Council, both with consultative votes.
It also stated that a general assembly should approve the new statutes by not later than November 30, 2003.
“Another general assembly should elect a new executive committee according to the new statutes by no later than December 31, 2003,” the letter reads further.
However, Fifa has turned its back on the council’s request to give it the mandate to dissolve Fam executive.
“We recognise the elected executive and we will not accept any measures taken against it by any external bodies, in particular a proposal suggested by the Malawi National Council of Sports in a letter to Fifa sent on 23rd July, 2003,” stated the letter from Fifa.
Fifa also assured in its letter that it is taking the necessary steps so that it can assist Fam to improve its work.
Sports Council executive secretary George Jana confirmed having received a copy of the letter from Fifa.
“We will be having a meeting on Wednesday basically to discuss the next step. We will not involve Fam as yet but obviously we shall involve the minister.
“I will also be writing a letter to Fam asking them to give us names to sit in the adhoc committee and from there we will see how it goes but ordinarily it should be Fam taking the first step because we are only coming in as an interested party,” explained Jana. |
