Hyena chews Dedza man
by Francis Tayanjah-Phiri, 03 September 2003 - 18:06:31
A roving hyena killed and ate a man in the Central Region district of Dedza, on Saturday night, near Lands Houses, police have confirmed.
Alex Kagona, 57, is said to have left his village of Chitusi, in Chief Kaphuka’s area, earlier in the day to visit friends and relatives at Mthandizi, a township within Dedza.
Sources say the man had been relaxing with his friends at Mthandizi and had started off for his home late in the evening.
Later the following day (on Sunday), his wife became uncomfortable after noting that Kagona had not returned from his journey.
On Monday she followed up on the missing husband and her fear yielded when she found her husband’s clothes and a necktie near Lands Housing, along the way.
Police investigation around the area on Monday morning found some parts of the badly devoured body with only few parts like the head, intestines and lungs.
“It is true that parts of a body of a man we suspect to have been killed and eaten by a hyena was found in the said locality (Lands Houses) in Dedza. Police went to search the area after the deceased’s clothes were found and identified by his wife,” said police spokesman George Chikowi.
Chikowi advised people not to walk long distances at night on foot and alone, saying some Central Region districts like Dedza and Ntcheu have a long reputation of hyenas attacking people on isolated sights.
He said: “The Dedza incident is very shocking, it is only proper that communities and individuals should take precautionary measures to avoid those traumatic incidents.”
