Loud and clear. The world’s soccer governing body Fifa on Wednesday cleared up the controversy surrounding the resignation of John Zingale as Fam president stating that his public announcement to that effect was enough and there is no need for him to write an official letter.
Fifa’s clarification comes in the wake of Fam executive’s recent decision to reinstate its embattled head on the grounds that he did not tender a resignation letter but only made an announcement at a press conference.
Fifa’s development officer Ashford Mamelodi, who is also Cosafa general secretary, said in a telephone interview from his base in Botswana’s capital, Gaborone, that Zingale’s resignation was well communicated.
“There is no need for him to write an official letter, he made a public announcement that he had resigned and that was enough.
“His resignation was well communicated and it is in the records of all the bodies that Fam is affiliated to including Fifa,” explained Mamelodi.
Mamelodi also said he presented his findings regarding the problems that have hit Fam to Fifa and the latter will be coming up with its decision in due course.
Fam executive agreed at its meeting held in Lilongwe on Sunday that it could not accept Zingale’s resignation on the basis he did not officially step down.
The association’s spokesman George Kaudza Masina said: “Zingale announced his resignation to the press but the proper procedure would have been writing an official letter to the association.”
Some top club officials described Fam’s move to reinstate Zingale as unfortunate. MTL Wanderers chairman Humphrey Mvula has been quoted as saying Zingale should not be put in an awkward situation because he publicly resigned.
