Two members of the Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) will leave on Monday for South Africa to participate in a week-long coaching clinic to be conducted by National Basketball Association (NBA) of America.
Basmal chairman James Gwaza, who is also general secretary of Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association of Malawi (Ocgam), said the two, Falcons coach Blair Phiri and Victor Jere of Chancol Hawks have been offered air tickets from Blantyre to Lilongwe by Southern Bottlers Limited.
“Sobo is also providing them with travel allowances apart from the tickets from Blantyre to Lilongwe. NBA offered airtickets from Lilongwe to South Africa,” said Gwaza.
Gwaza said the clinic, which is expected to attract top basketball players and coaches from Africa, will benefit Basmal because Phiri and Jere are going to sharpen their coaching skills.
“Definitely these two will impart the knowledge that they will obtain to others here and that will help promote basketball in Malawi,’ said Gwaza.
In a related development Malawi has been invited to participate in the Engen African Challenge basketball tournament slated for October 2 to 5 in Durban, South Africa.
The tournament will attract various countries such as Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland among others.
Basmal will send a 12-man squad to be selected from 30 players.
“The interaction with basketball teams of other countries will help our players to acquire international experience,” said Gwaza.
