S. Africa promoter invites Malawian boxers
by Frazer Nazombe, 26 August 2003 - 18:24:19
South Africa-based veteran boxing promoter Kalleil Hammond, who was in the country on a whistle-stop tour from Zambia, has invited professional Malawian boxers to take part in a heavyweight tournament slated for October 10 in Johannesburg.
Hammond, who has promoted various pugilists such as world champion Corri Sanders, Herold Folbregt, Gerry Coetzee and Bran Uris among others, said there is a lot of potential in Malawi.
“There are a lot of good boxers in Malawi but they have no opportunity to get out for international exposure. We need to bring these boxers down to South Africa where they can develop their skills,” said Hammond.
He said he intends to promote boxers from Bajawekha stables in conjunction with Bester Saopa but there is need to have their own gymnasium.
“What we need is a permanent gym with a fixed ring. It must be a place for boxers only,” he said in reference to the Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) boxing ring which was dismantled because of other games in the BYC gym.
Saopa said the South African has come at a good time to prop up the sport.
“We are going to work hand in hand with him in promoting boxers especially those from the Bajawekha Boxing Club but we would like to ask all boxers who are interested to come at 10AM on Saturday at BYC for initial preparations,” said Saopa.
Hammond, who is currently working on a borehole, drilling project in Mozambique left Tuesday.
