Xerographics have pumped K55,000 into the Lilongwe Squash Rackets Association to help them run the league which kicks off this Thursday, a league official Jeremiah Magaba has disclosed..
“We are thankful to the sponsors for giving us the money. This is a very good gesture because it will help to promote the sport in the country,” said Magaba.
Magaba said in an interview on Tuesday that the eight-team league will play its games at Lilongwe Golf Club and Capital Hotel squash courts.
The games, which will start at 6PM, will be played on a best of five sets format using the American scoring system. Each team will parade a contingent of five players for each fixture, according to Magaba.
The teams are Reserve Bank of Malawi, Capital Hotel, Lilongwe Golf Club, Muslim Sports Club, Donors, Xerox IBM, Kenya Airways and Bishop Mackenzie International School.
Xerox IBM are rated favourites as they boast household names like Aubrey Ng’onamo who is away in Namibia for the Namibia Open, George Jaffu, Gedion Nyirongo, Saidi Mafiya, Michelle Maynard, Marshal Chilenga, John Mataya and Furkani Nathanie.
The opening games will see Reserve Bank facing Donors at Capital Hotel Court 1 while Capital Hotel take on Xerox IBM at Capital Hotel Court 2. Lilongwe Golf Club take on Kenya Airways at Lilongwe Golf Club Court 1 while Muslim Sports Club will battle it out with Bishop Mackenzie at Lilongwe Golf Club Court 2.
