Mzuzu Agriculture Development Division (Mzadd) is singing praises of British American Tobacco Malawi Limited following the donation of 15 bicycles to the division by the company on Friday.
“We sincerely thank BAT Malawi for their goodwill gesture by responding favourably to our request. We expected to receive a bike or two, but were surprised to hear that they were donating 15 bicycles,” said Kondwani Nkhonde, District Agriculture Development Officer for Rumphi at the presentation ceremony held at the company’s premises in Blantyre.
Rumphi falls under the jurisdiction of Mzadd.
Nkhonde, who disclosed that BAT was the only company out of 68 which responded favourably to their request for assistance, said the bicycles will ease transport problems for agriculture inputs as well as domestic errands.
“This will definitely promote competitiveness amongst the farmers as they adopt new technologies,” he said. He also appealed to other companies and organisations to follow BAT’s example.
Taking his turn, BAT’s human resources and corporate affairs manager Alfred Machelo said his firm did not hesitate to respond to the request for assistance because they believe that agriculture is the hub for the Malawi economy, so farmers need to be encouraged in every way possible.
“British American Tobacco Malawi Limited has made this donation to Rumphi farmers, not only as prizes but as tools to motivate them in their farming skills since they play a big role in the country’s economy.
The bicycles will be given to farmers who will display quality livestock and other farm products at a show to be held on Thursday in Rumphi.
BAT also donated 10 bicycles recently to the Southern Region agriculture show held at Lirangwe in Blantyre.
