When Abby, Gaetano, Cherise and Mwisho were lined up on the chopping board for an eviction in the Big Brother Africa house last weekend, it was the South African fraud consultant who was booted out.
In fact, the 11 votes that saw Abby going out of the house were just too overwhelming. — the highest ever since the controversial show started 90 days ago. It was strange that out of 13 votes, Abby collected a massive 11.
But why?
Abby was one of the most exciting housemates in the house. She was a loud-mouthed flirt who seemed to get along with everyone in the house. She was so intimate with each one of them to the extent that she fell in love with Gaetano.
If people were really to vote out the most boring person among the four people, it is highly unlikely that it should have been Abby because she wasn’t boring.
However, it seems the whole continent rose up against her for whatever reason and that’s why they voted her out overwhelmingly.
Could the reason be that she was a “disgrace” after having sex with Gaetano in the house? But why didn’t people vote out Gaetano?
“It could be,” psychologist Chiwoza Bandawe told Nation Online in an interview. “Generally speaking, standards on behaviour and expectation between men and women are different. When you are a woman, you are expected to behave in a certain way.”
He added: “Of course, the standards for women are higher because they are seen as influential in bringing up children. Therefore, their values and character are expected to be exemplary as compared to men.”
The psychologist thinks that this could be the reason why Abby got the boot and what happened to her is a manifestation of the control and power that African men have over women.
“People are more critical of women than men, that’s a fact,” said Bandawe.
However, with Gaetano again among the five housemates up for eviction tomorrow, it will judged whether the African society is biased towards men if the Ugandan survives. |
